Weekend trips are a huge part of au pair life in Europe — honestly, that’s a big part of the appeal. One of the main reasons I became an au pair was the ability to travel, and having weekends off with easy train access makes exploring Europe feel almost too good not to take advantage of.
Because these are weekend trips, I don’t need much. I’ve learned to pack light and only bring what I actually use. I stick to a small-but-spacious backpack that’s easy to carry while exploring, and over time I’ve figured out a repeatable packing formula that works every time.
Below is exactly what I pack for any weekend trip — no overthinking required.
The Backpack I Always Use
I always use my black backpack that I bought before moving to France. It’s the perfect size: small enough to carry comfortably all day, but roomy enough to fit all my essentials — including a full outfit for the next day. Plus, it’s stylish enough that it doesn’t cramp my style.

Clothing: Neutral, Comfortable & Repeatable
I pack one main outfit plus layers that can mix and match. Keeping everything neutral makes it easy.
Here’s what I usually bring:
A plain black long sleeve or tank for layering
A silk skirt or a good pair of denim jeans
A cozy sweater that works for walking and dinners
Pajamas
Fresh undergarments for the next day
I’ve learned that you don’t need multiple outfit options — just one outfit you actually love wearing.

Shoes I Rely On
My go-to walking shoes are my Adidas Campus 00s. They’ve been such a staple during my time in Europe — comfortable enough for long days and cute enough for everyday outfits.
If I want something slightly dressier, I’ll wear my black booties. The only shoes I bring are the ones I'm wearing. So it's crucial to have a comfortable pair.

Travel Essentials I Never Leave Without
These are the items I bring on every weekend trip, no exceptions:
Reusable stainless steel water bottle
AirPods for train rides and exploring
Kindle (perfect for travel days)
Portable charger — absolutely essential
European plug adapter
Multi-charging cable to keep everything organized

Toiletries & Personal Items
I keep all my toiletries in a small, simple toiletry bag — nothing bulky or overly structured. I keep my skincare minimal and usually don’t pack makeup at all.
I also always bring my journal so I can write things down and remember moments I would otherwise forget.

Bags & Organization
I love a good crossbody bag for easy access while exploring — it’s practical and still looks put together. I also keep all my electronics in a small zip pouch so chargers don’t end up floating around my backpack.

What I Don’t Pack Anymore
I don’t pack “just in case” outfits. If I don’t love the outfit before I pack it, it’s not coming with me. These are weekend trips — the shoes I wear are usually the shoes I wear the entire time.
I also avoid full-size toiletries as much as I can. Travel-size items save space and make packing so much easier.

Packing light has completely changed how I travel. When you’re not weighed down by extra stuff, it’s easier to enjoy where you are, move freely, and stay present. I’ve learned that I don’t need much — just the right things.
If you’re an au pair, studying abroad, or planning weekend trips around Europe, I hope this gives you a realistic, repeatable packing list you can actually use. Save this post, use it as a checklist, and adjust it to fit your own style.
And if this inspires you to plan that weekend trip, do it. The experiences will always be worth it.
